How EMDR Works
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, research-supported therapy designed to help people heal from traumatic memories and distressing experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require detailed discussion of the event. Instead, it focuses on helping the brain reprocess memories that have become “stuck” due to overwhelming emotion or trauma.
Bilateral Stimulation and Dual Awareness
A key part of EMDR is bilateral stimulation—gentle, rhythmic left-right movements such as eye movements, sounds, or tapping. This helps activate both sides of the brain, allowing you to stay grounded in the present while accessing painful memories from the past. This process, known as dual awareness, allows you to observe and work through distressing material without being fully overwhelmed by it. You remain aware that you’re safe, here and now, even as you revisit difficult experiences.
Why EMDR is Different
EMDR taps into the brain’s natural healing ability without requiring you to relive trauma in full detail. It helps transform the emotional charge of painful memories so they can be stored in a more adaptive way. Many people experience noticeable relief in fewer sessions compared to traditional talk therapy—especially when EMDR is delivered in longer, intensive formats. It's not about forgetting what happened; it's about freeing yourself from its emotional grip.
